Wine shops and online wine shops
Have you ever noticed, when in various commercial premises, how some companies are organised to the hilt, whilst others you enter seem to be in a permanent state of happy confusion, and totally oblivious to the mayhem of their own making? Well that just cannot be allowed to happen in a wine shop like ours.
Wine shops are not just a display cabinet for the various wines from all over the world. They also have backrooms, and the lucky ones have cellars too. And that is where the organisation comes in because stock must be rotated.
You may laugh at that last point because it isn’t that the wine will “go off” as such, in any way as perishable goods do - should it be kept back and sold later than is the norm. But good stock rotation is the only way to run a busy wine shop, or the ordering system would be in chaos within a week. And that would cause serious problems for the management and customers alike.
When it comes to stock, not every wine shop has the required space to keep examples of wines worldwide, so in those cases you may notice that they will specialise in, for example, French wine, and keep a relatively small stock of bottles from probably Germany, Italy, Australia etc - if you get the drift.
That way they can at least fill orders for those wanting something other than French wines, should the need arise.
